Gerry Anderson: A Life Uncharted (plus Q&A) (PG)

Dir: Benjamin Field | 90min

Featuring a live Q&A with director Benjamin Field and producer Jamie Anderson.

Gerry Anderson and his teams produced a collection of groundbreaking and internationally-loved sci-fi adventure shows and films – including Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet – that continue to enthral successive generations decades after their first transmission.

But what really inspired and drove him to become such a prolific creator? This new documentary uses previously unseen and unheard interviews, combined with cutting-edge technology, to map Gerry Anderson’s previously uncharted journey: from a poverty-stricken childhood, raised by a Jewish father and an anti-Semitic mother, to becoming a puppetry pioneer and legendary producer.

Royal Opera House Live: Swan Lake

Encore screenings from the Royal Opera House.

This classic fairytale represents the battle between good and evil, and the attempt of love to conquer all. The magic of the lakes, forests and palaces is brought to life with glittering designs by John Macfarlane and a sublime score by Tchaikovsky.

The Royal Ballet’s sumptuous production of Swan Lake returns to the Royal Opera House stage after its 2020 revival was interrupted by the pandemic’s closure of theatres. This classic of the repertory is testament to the late choreographer Liam Scarlett’s abiding love of classicism and innate musicality, which shine through this production.

National Theatre Live: Straight Line Crazy

A new play by David Hare, directed by Nicholas Hytner.

Ralph Fiennes (Antony & Cleopatra) leads the cast in David Hare’s (Skylight) blazing account of the most powerful man in New York, a master manipulator whose legacy changed the city forever.

For forty uninterrupted years, Robert Moses exploited those in office through a mix of charm and intimidation. Motivated at first by a determination to improve the lives of New York City’s workers, he created parks, bridges and 627 miles of expressway to connect the people to the great outdoors.

Faced with resistance by protest groups campaigning for a very different idea of what the city should become, will the weakness of democracy be exposed in the face of his charismatic conviction?

Broadcast live from the Bridge Theatre in London, Nicholas Hytner directs this exhilarating new play.

National Theatre Live: Prima Facie

Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) makes her West End debut in the UK premiere of Suzie Miller’s award-winning play.

Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) makes her West End debut in the UK premiere of Suzie Miller’s award-winning play.

Tessa is a young, brilliant barrister. She has worked her way up from working class origins to be at the top of her game; defending; cross examining and winning. An unexpected event forces her to confront the lines where the patriarchal power of the law, burden of proof and morals diverge.

Prima Facie takes us to the heart of where emotion and experience collide with the rules of the game.

Justin Martin directs this solo tour de force, captured live from the intimate Harold Pinter Theatre in London’s West End.

A production from Empire Street Productions.
