Art Themen Quartet (sax)

Tribute to the Three Tenors

A nostalgic look at the music of the Blue Note Era and the classic repertoire of the three tenor sax giants John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and Joe Henderson. Much of this music was recorded at the classic Englewood cliffs Studio by the great visionary engineer Rudy Van Gelder. The bold harmonies and rhythms, the improvisational language and the spirit in which this music came together will be forever etched in western music history books.

A self-taught musician, Art Themen played tenor saxophone with a university jazz band while studying medicine at Cambridge.

After qualifying as a doctor, he moved to London and in the early 60s played in several blues and R&B bands. During this period he worked with Alexis Korner, Phil Seamen, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker and Long John Baldry. In the late 60s and early 70s his musical direction shifted towards jazz and he played with Barbara Thompson, Michael Garrick, Henry Lowther and Graham Collier.

In 1974 he began a long and particularly fruitful association with Stan Tracey, which continued into the 90s. He has also accompanied numerous visiting US jazzmen, including Al Haig, Red Rodney, George Coleman and Nat Adderley. A highly individual playing style marks Themen’s performances.

The Dime Notes

The Dime Notes dig back into the blues - drenched sounds of clarinet - driven 1920’s New Orleans jazz, unearthing a repertoire of stomps, blues, and forgotten gems of the era from musicians such as Jelly Roll Morton, Johnny Dodds, and Red Nichols.

Fronted by Chris Barber’s long - time clarinetist David Horniblow, an established figure on the European jazz stage and pianist composer Sam Watts, the band is anchored by the unstoppable pulse of London’s knockout rhythm section, guitarist Dave Kelbie, accompanist in Evan Christopher’s Django a la Creole, John Etheridge’s Sweet Chorus and bassist Louis Thomas, well known across the international scene for his swing and versatility and in demand across many genre boundaries with his huge sound and stylistic versatility.

The Dime Notes present a fresh take on a timeless style, emphasising the propulsive grooves and sultry melodies which made early jazz revolutionary, controversial, and wildly popular.

The Sharon Shannon Quartet

Sharon Shannon is a musician who likes to surprise. While she is known for her arrangements of traditional Irish tunes and Irish-influenced compositions, she has always been eager to explore new styles, and to meet and work with other musicians.

The accordionist from Ireland has achieved legendary status throughout the world and has made the much-maligned accordion 'cool' in her home country. Renowned for her collaborations, not just in Irish traditional music, but through all musical genres, Hip-Hop, Cajun, Country, Reggae, Classical and Rap.

The genre-defying star has achieved multi-platinum album sales and has had several number chart topping albums, singles and DVDs in her home country. In 2015, she received an IBAM Award in Chicago for her ‘unique contribution to Irish Music’ Other recipients were Darina Allen and actor Liam Neeson.

Sharon's latest studio album, The Reckoning, will be released on 27 November this year. This album was composed, written and recorded in its entirety during lockdown, featuring over a dozen remote collaborations from locations across the globe. All the tracks on the album are newly composed original tunes and songs which are co-written by Sharon and band members and various guest collaborators.

Josephine Davis Quartet (sax)

Tribute to Women Composers in Jazz

In the ostensibly male dominated world of jazz, sometimes the Female composers are not given their due credit. The quartet led by Josephine will re exam some of these classic gems by the likes of Dorothy Fields, Nina Simone, Ann Ronnell. The band will also perform some latin influenced music by the more contemporary composers Maria Schneider and Elane Elias, with some beautiful compositions from Josephine herself added to the mix.

Winner of the 2019 Parliamentary Award ‘Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year’, Josephine Davies is a musical artist at the forefront of the UK contemporary music scene, pushing the boundaries of jazz with her current main artistic project Satori – a sax/bass/drums trio with an emphasis on extended and collaborative improvisation. It is a project that combines her seeking of freedom of expression with her interest in Japanese philosophy and lifestyle. As a saxophonist she is known for her melodic focus, versatility and unique style which has been described as 'consistently inventive' (Jazzwise Magazine), 'strong and authoritative' (The JazzMann) and 'with winning immediacy' (MOJO Magazine).

Now becoming equally known as a composer, her unique voice is a blend of classical, jazz and folk music, creating an intensely dynamic sound infused with the Nordic quality of her Shetland roots. Deeply influenced by the American composer Maria Schneider, Josephine was resident composer and tenor player for the London Jazz Orchestra from 2011-2016, and now has her own big band ‘The Enso Ensemble’.

John Coghlan's Quo

Featuring John Coghlan - The Heartbeat of Quo.

Original Quo drummer John Coghlan, with his great band, brings you a night of vintage Quo from the period he performed with Status Quo 1962 - 1981.

John Coghlan joined Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster in their newly formed band The Spectres in 1962. The group went through a series of name changes, including Traffic Jam, before becoming Status Quo in the late 60s when Rick Parfitt also joined the line-up. In the years that followed, a string of chart-topping hits include: Pictures Of Matchstick Men, Caroline, Break The Rules , Down Down, Roll Over Lay Down, Rain, Mystery Song, Wild Side Of Life, Rocking All Over The World, Again And Again and Whatever You Want.

For Quo fans and critics alike, this time is often regarded as Quo’s 'Classic' period.
Since leaving Quo, John has worked with many noted and diverse musicians, in his own Diesel Band; with Partners in Crime; and the Rocker’ featuring Phil Lynott, Roy Wood and Chas Hodges. Other collaborations have included Noel Redding (ex-Jimi Hendrix) and Eric Bell (ex-Thin Lizzy).

In 2013 and 2014, John re-joined Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt and Alan Lancaster for the two sell-out Status Quo Frantic Four Reunion Tours, appearing all over the UK and Europe and reigniting the excitement of the early days of Quo.

During the late nineties John Coghlan’s Quo was formed and through various line-ups has enjoyed regular gigs all over the UK and Europe. The current band consists of John on drums, with Mick Hughes on guitar and vocals, Rick Chase on bass and vocals, Pete Mace on guitar and vocals, and Russ Chadd on percussion and additional drums completing the line-up.

The band enjoys playing all over the UK and Europe, with their prime aim to recreate an authentic '70’s Quo Sound' in keeping with John’s time with Quo. For Quo fans and critics alike, this time is often regarded as Quo’s 'Classic' period.

Kathakali

Kathakali is the classical dance drama of Kerala, south India and combines storytelling, dance, drama, ritual, vibrant costumes and an intricate makeup featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the most three dimensional make up in the world.

The tour focuses on making Kathakali as accessible and enjoyable to as many people as possible including children, families, and students, both from Asian and non -Asian communities.

The performance offers a rare opportunity to see Kathakali in this country, view the makeup, see the costumes, and meet the artists.

Before the performance starts a demonstration will illustrate how a Kathakali actor tells a story through emotions, facial expressions, characters, and gestures. A short film will take the audience back in time when Kathakali first emerged 600 years ago.

The performance that follows highlights the need for women and girls to be respected and to feel safe.

In addition to the performance there is an opportunity to learn more about Kathakali through a drama -based workshop led by a top artist from Kerala.

The couple met whilst studying at the world -famous centre for the study of arts and culture in Kerala, the Kerala Kalamandalam. Kalamandalam Vijayakumar a student of acting and Kalamandalam Barbara a student of chutti make -up. Barbara became the first female chutti make -up artist in the world!

The company are looking forward to performing at Norden Farm where the intricate use of the Kathakali actors eyes and facial expressions can be appreciated.

Keith James in concert: The Songs of Leonard Cohen

‘There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in’ Cohen’s most memorable and visionary line from his song ANTHEM.

If ever there was a sentence in modern poetry to reflect on and give hope and understanding to us all, it is this line. This Concert begins with ANTHEM.

Enigmatic, mysterious and sub textural, songwriter Leonard Cohen was an unflinching character, with an exact sense of prose, wry humour and the courage to wrestle with the unspoken, forgiving human frailty with the stroke of each word.

The chilling announcement of Leonard's death marked the end of an era. His music befriended an entire generation. Within every line of his writing, he has been challenging us to listen more carefully, speak more thoughtfully, think more deeply and recognize our own fragility. Our World misses him very much.

With a lifetime reputation of performing in this exact way and an undying love of the ‘pure song’ Keith James gives you a concert of Cohen’s amazing material in the most intimate and sensitive way imaginable, exposing the solitary inner strength of his greatest songs in their original perfect form. Keith has performed an extensive tour of this concert in Theatres and Arts Centres across the UK, giving almost 500 concerts – close to 150,000 people. This has proved to be one of the greatest honours in Keith James’ 40 year career. Keith lives in Powys, Wales and sometimes in Andalusia, Spain.

Included in the concert are Cohen’s well-known songs: Famous Blue Raincoat, Sisters of Mercy, Suzanne, and Hallelujah alongside his rarer and profound writing such as Who by Fire, Joan of Arc and Secret Life. Also included are songs from his posthumous album Thanks for the Dance such as What happens to the Heart and Keith’s dramatic performances based on the work of Federico Garcia Lorca – Cohen’s greatest influence. Keith has also transcribed into song one of Leonard’s poems from his collection ‘Book of longing’ written whilst on retreat during the 1990s.

‘Some of the most atmospheric and emotive music you will ever hear’ The Independent

‘Good work! Glad you are keeping Leonard’s songs alive’ Sylvie Simmons, Biographer – The Life of Leonard Cohen

‘Keith James has become a pillar of trust. A sublimely intimate and engaging voice’ Sunday Times

‘An elegant and beautifully crafted reinterpretation of a great Artist’s words’ BBC Radio Scotland

‘Certainly the UK’s most celebrated and evocative interpreter of golden music’ The Guardian

‘All the tears of time are shed in a few brief lines’ Times Literary Supplement

‘A sensitive and pleasingly understated delivery, all the better that the songs might speak for themselves’ Acoustic Magazine
