Swing Crazy: 1930s-style Dance

Led by John and Debra Scanlon (of RockinRhythm)

Learn to Lindy Hop with a couple who have danced, performed and taught together since meeting on the dance floor in 1996. Lindy Hop is the great partner swing dance from New York's Savoy Ballroom. From exuberant and light-hearted to laid back and smooth, Lindy Hop is an expressive dance that puts a smile on every face. Join us for some beginner classes and you will soon be dancing to some of the greatest music ever.

Sunday Stories - Spoken Word Special!

Presented by Norden Farm and Simon Mole, supported by Apples and Snakes.

Poet, Simon Mole is taking over our Sunday Stories slot with a spoken word special! Expect poems about ninja skeletons, raps about pug dogs playing football, stories about boys who meet Pacman and girls who can’t stop drumming. With special guest, singer-songwriter, Gecko (Glastonbury, Bestival and BBC Radio 1).

Age guidance 4 - 11 years.

£3 per person.

Gecko is a North London based artist. He has previously appeared at Glastonbury, Bestival and BBC Radio 1. He's shared stages with the likes of Josie Long, Robin Ince, John Hegley, Beans on Toast and Billy Bragg. He returned to the Edinburgh Fringe this year with his second hour No Rest for the Lizard and will release his debut album 'Volcano' this Autumn.

Simon Mole was the first Poet Laureate for the London borough of Brent, and is a member of the acclaimed poetry collective Chill Pill. Since becoming a father Simon has written increasingly for young people, and his first play for children and families was commissioned by the V&A in 2016; Friends For All is touring with Half Moon Theatre.

Acrylics: Painterly Impasto Landscapes

Led by Karen Carter

Using the work of Van Gogh and contemporary artists as our inspiration we will explore using acrylics in the style of an oil painting, incorporating impasto gel to hold brushmarks and create texture, resulting in an energetic and expressive image. Bring own materials.

Please bring the below materials with you:

  • Photos/sketches of landscapes as starting points
  • Drawing pencils, rubber
  • Impasto or structure gel

Acrylics: Pattern, Colour & Cutouts - Matisse

Led by Karen Carter

Referencing Matisse as our starting point we will colour sheets of paper ready to create our cutouts – ‘painting with scissors’. We will then add further layers of paint, pattern and linework to complete a bold graphic piece of work.

Please bring the following materials with you:

  • Photos/sketches/props for still life as starting points
  • Drawing pencils, rubber, scissors
  • Variety of brushes (soft/bristle)
  • Acrylic paints (please include primaries in your selection)
  • Watercolour paper
  • 2 water jars, mixing palette, kitchen roll

Portrait Drawing

Led by Harriet Brittaine

Learn about the stages of portraiture, drawing with charcoal from a live model. Students are taught about proportion, the structure of the head and tonal values. Experiment with creating contrast between light and dark (chiaroscuro) to depict facial features. Suitable for all levels of experience.

Acrylics: Townscapes - Expressive & Loose

Using townscapes as our inspiration we will create a mixed media quirky stylized image using simple printing with polystyrene blocks combined with acrylic painting, collage & drawn elements that can be done on both paper and fabric.

A fun experimental approach suitable for everyone.

Reduction Linoprinting

Led by Karen Carter

A two-week workshop designed to demystify the process of reduction lino-printing. There will be step-by-step demos covering initial planning and design, through cutting the plate to registration, inking and printing. Lots of individual help to ensure everyone goes home with a completed set of prints.

Please bring the below materials with you:

  • Photos/sketches as starting points (tutor will also have some images you can work from)
  • Drawing pencils, rubber, scissors,
  • Sketching paper for test prints
  • Kitchen roll/baby wipes
